Custodial Services

The normal procedure for custodial care of the Chemistry Building involves scheduled cleaning of offices, classrooms, restrooms, laboratories and other public areas. Public areas are cleaned daily. Restrooms, classrooms, hallways, entrances, lobbies, elevators and most stairways are considered public areas. Please refer to the colored dots placed on the upper right hand corner of the doorjamb. Below is the key to identify which day of the week and which week your area is scheduled for cleaning:

  • Blue - Monday
  • White - Tuesday
  • Yellow - Wednesday
  • Green - Thursday
  • No dot - Daily
  • Red/White - No Service

Two dots indicate scheduled cleaning takes place twice per week. Private offices are on a weekly schedule. If your trash needs emptied prior to your scheduled cleaning, tie the liner up and place in the hallway after 5:00 p.m. The custodians place extra liners in the trashcans for your use.

It is your responsibility to get recycling items to the blue containers in hallways. If you wish to discard items with UI tag numbers on them, please remove the tags, and inform Gene Hauge(5-1383) of the disposition of the particular item. Chemistry Stores loans out equipment for moving instruments, and Custodial has a desk mover.

Sharps must be placed in sharps containers (obtained from Chemistry Stores), sealed, taped, labeled and left in hallway. Proper handling of brown glass bottles: remove caps, rinse bottles and place in hallway.

Major “project work” is often scheduled between semesters and might include the following types of work:

  • Major light bulb changes
  • Buffing floors
  • Stripping/waxing floors
  • Cleaning carpets

Custodians will schedule project work in advance and post notices throughout the affected areas of the building. If light bulbs burn out in a work area, please report this to the front office and the bulb should be replaced during the regular workday. Problems with lights in fume hoods should also be reported to the front office. Custodians will change burned out bulbs in other areas of the building as they are discovered.
