UI chemists unlock new possibilities for rare-earth metal

A study led by assistant professor Korey Carter and associate professor Pere Miro shows it is possible to make terbium, a rare-earth metal used in electronics, medical imaging, and other technologies, easier and less expensive to separate and study.

Bess Vlaisavljevich Receives 2027 WCC Rising Star Award

The Women Chemists Committee (WCC) of the American Chemical Society has selected Bess Vlaisavljevich to be a recipient of the 2027 WCC Rising Star Award for excellence in the scientific enterprise. This award recognizes nine exceptional women scientists this year who are approaching mid-level careers across all sectors (academic, industrial, and government) who have demonstrated outstanding promise for contributions to their respective fields.

Despite the current challenging environment in obtaining critical external research funding, we are very happy for our faculty who have recently received new grants to support their research programs. Many of these are multi-year awards and support numerous students in our degree programs. These new research grants collectively total $2.3M.
