Research interests
The Carter Group uses f- and d-block coordination chemistry as a means to address fundamental questions relevant to quantum information science, nuclear medicine, radiation sciences, and critical material and nuclear separations. Students in the group learn to characterize new compounds and clusters using a wide range of physical and analytical methods that include single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. Current projects in the group fall into the following research areas: design of f-element polyoxometalates that can function as molecular spin qubits, development of chelators and small molecules for theranostic and medicinal inorganic chemistry applications, exploration of free radical interactions with actinide cations relevant to the nuclear fuel cycle, and creation of multifunctional f-element hybrid materials and metal-organic frameworks. Please see the group website for additional details.
