Department of Chemistry seeks Laboratory Coordinator

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), Department of Chemistry at the University of Iowa has an opening for a full-time Laboratory Coordinator.  This position provides technical and administrative support for the Instructors, students and staff of the Undergraduate Instructional Laboratories.  Must be a team player and have excellent verbal, written and laboratory skills.  Must have functional knowledge and understanding of laboratory course technology, scheduling, coordination and pedagogy.  Will do much of the bench level quality assurance of student staff produced solutions and hands on work for large enrollment student laboratories.   Ensure appropriate and accurate setups for the student experiments.  Assist in maintenance of accurate chemical inventory.  This position will assist with undergraduate employee supervision, SOP documentation and provide PCH2 back-up as necessary. The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday 8:00am-5:00pm.  Some flexibility will be needed as the person in this position may be expected to work some evenings and weekends.  This is a two-year specified term position with the possibility of extension. 

Key Duties Include:

  • Maintain open verbal and written communication with area Laboratory Managers and Administrator
  • Maintain awareness of current laboratory course scheduling and coordination
  • Provide technical and administrative support to the large –enrollment course Laboratory Manager
  • Instruct TAs and undergraduate staff on the safe use of small equipment/instrumentation
  • Operate and maintain experiment setups, small equipment/ instrumentation
  • Report and assist with facility issues/maintenance
  • Record and report course preparatory changes and issues
  • Assist in maintaining accurate SOPs
