Celebrate National Chemistry Week!
National Chemistry Week is October 19-25, and the University of Iowa Department of Chemistry is helping to celebrate! The NCW 2014 theme is "The Sweet Side of Chemistry—Candy", showcasing the chemistry involved in candy and confections. There will be two opportunities to enjoy.
On October 24th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., you can explore the chemistry of candy with hands-on activities and demonstrations. Chemists will be on the T. Anne Cleary walkway, outside the Chemistry Building (rain location: 3rd floor CB, near the periodic table.)
We will be participating in STEM night at the Iowa Children's Museum on October 31st from 5-8 p.m. Chemistry faculty, post-docs and students will host hands on activities in the art room:
- Sour candy surprise activity in the Celebrating Chemistry workbook, a National Science Education Standards-aligned hands-on activity newspaper for elementary school students
- Candy chromatography
There will also be Interactive displays on different forms and properties of sucrose.
