Conventional solid-state materials synthesis often relies on high temperatures to facilitate reactions between relatively stable and inert starting materials. Materials chemistry research in the Gillan group is directed towards the design of new precursor-based synthetic methods for the facile and flexible growth of inorganic and organic extended solid-state structures. Such approaches have yielded materials as diverse as metal or non-metal nitrides, phosphides, oxides, and sulfides formed as porous structures, nanosized particles, or metastable thin films. Several of these materials are being examined in photocatalytic studies and others may find use in energy conversion and storage, optical emission, and magnetic applications.
